Exciting Activities & Adventures

Seaforth Country Lodge’s idyllic location offers our guest a wide choice of awesome activities, tours and sights – this beautiful area has something for everyone!
Naturally, the mighty Drakensberg mountains are the main attraction! Historically, they have been central to local peoples and cultures, and each of these major groups had their own names for the mountains. The Zulus called them: Ukhahlamba, which aptly translates to “Barrier of Spears’. The Sotho people refer to the mountains as the ‘Maloti’ or ‘Maluti’, which simply means mountains, and the boere likened the mountains to a dragon’s back, which inspired the name: Drakensberge.
Today, the area has been internationally acclaimed for it’s exceptional rich biodiversity and fauna and flora. In addition, it is also home to around 30000 San Rock Art paintings! This is widely considered one the biggest repositories of rock art on earth. This led to yet another remarkable fact about the area – it was awarded World Heritage Status for not one, but two attributes. This is a claim to fame that only a small handful of world heritage sites can make.
So, it should come as no surprise that there is a literal smorgasbord of things to see, do and experience during your stay at Seaforth…
Bird Watching & Indigenous Game
The Drakensberg is home to more than 300 bird species. Of these, 200 are found on Seaforth Lodge’s grounds, including eagles, cormorants, vultures and many more.
All year round you may spot Rhebuck and Duikers. In winter the Elands also come down from the high mountains to graze on the farm, and Chacma baboons may visit. At night the Jackals sing their plaintiff lullabies, and if you are lucky, you may even spot Serval as well!
You can download a list of commonly seen birds below and see how many you can tick off the list during your stay!

Hiking
There are footpaths leading from Seaforth to picnic sites along the river… Bring a picnic basket, swim in the gorgeous pools in the river, or follow the river 1.5 km upstream to a beautiful waterfall. The journey will require crossing the river twice, but that’s just part of the fun!
From the waterfall, continuing another km will bring you to the famous Sani Pass Hotel for lunch or a drink. We can also arrange for a guide to take you to Bushman paintings which can be reached by foot from the lodge, or high berg escarpment challenges.
Explore The Legendary Sani Pass 4x4 Trail
The Sani Pass is not for the fainthearted! It begins at 1544m and rises 1332 vertical meters to summit at 2876m. Whilst up there, make sure you visit the ‘Highest Pub in Africa’ at 2875 meters above sea level, and honestly, some people confess to needing that drink following the adrenaline rush the journey brings! It’s an adventurer’s dream: hairpin bends and views to take your breath away!-)
You can drive your own 4×4 vehicle, or we can arrange for one of the local tour operators to pick you up from the lodge. Be sure not to forget your passport, so that you can get right to the top and celebrate reaching the ‘Kingdom in The Sky’.

The Himeville Museum
For history buffs and lovers of all things vintage, the area is a dream come true! Seaforth itself has been a part of the local history for more than a century and the Himeville Museum is a must-visit too.
The Himeville Museum and Fort is both a historical site (the old fort, and prison) as well as a beautifully curated history museum. Aspects of local history are all represented and portrayed in the rooms of the museum, including the local prison, the telephone exchange, the school: the farming implements of the time, etc. The museum also represents the array of different communities in the area: from the original Khoi/San (with local caves to visit). to the settlers and other people of the wider area. The attention to detail even extends to the local fauna and flora, and clothing and kitchens of the day. There is an open garden courtyard in the middle of the fort, shaded with a bench to rest on. It’s an exceptional museum that will be of interest to all ages.
Horse Riding. Trout Fishing, Golfing and So Much More...
For many people, being out in nature on horseback is an unbeatable experience. Horse riding is a very popular local activity and can be arranged at several local stables.
Serious fishing enthusiasts might argue that fishing is the only real choice, and they would be spoilt for choice when it comes to local fishing spots :-).
For our golfing enthusiasts there is also much to look forward to, with the Underberg Country Club and Sani Pas Hotel greens being particular favorites.
There really is SO much to do during your stay, so for more options, ask our friendly team – we’re always willing to help you fid your perfect adventures.
